Pilonidal Cystectomy
Yea I had one on Thursday 8-28-08. A Pilonidal cyst is at the base of your spine, top of your ass crack. It's there b/c that's the last place that seals up while you're in the womb and it can form a little bubble. It's normal skin w/ hair follicles and sweat glands so that stuff can build up and get infected. Type in pilonidal cyst on youtube to see more.
I noticed this b/c one day in summer my ass crack itched/burned when I woke up. I looked and saw a black circle where the burning was centered. I was kinda freaked out, so I looked it up on the internets. They told me that the hole was a pilonidal sinus - a track to the surface of the skin that lead to the cyst . Once I read up on the rest of this disease I realized that there were signs I could have seen a while back like tailbone pain, a "moveable tailbone", etc.
So I go to the doctor and he tells me that I got my diagnosis right (Thanks for your honesty interwebs). He says these often need to be surgically removed and rarely go away. When I get to the surgeon's office (after a couple weeks of anti-biotics) he says that it's lower down than usual and will take longer to heal.
So last thursday the cut it out and I was supposed to be gone in like 22 hours so I wasn't an inpatient, but he didn't come back to check up on me until like 11:30 the next day ( I was in at 8:30 thursday). Then they didn't let me leave b/c they needed to get home-healthcare situated. I stayed until 4:30 doing nothing until the nurse finally came in and said we could just leave, much to the social worker's chagrin.
The surgery itself was fine. I was out cold- they could have done open heart surgery on me if they wanted. I woke up two hours later in the recovery room and had to wait there for a few hours to get a room. That was pretty boring but I drifted in and out of sleep so I was ok. At night I had to piss like a race horse b/c I went 14 hours w/o peeing AND had used nearly two IV's. The nurse (the night shift nurse was really nice) help me get up and I peed for like 8 minutes on and off - much like Austin Powers did. With my bladder close to empty I could finally get some sleep, but woke up twice to pee. Having to pee and waiting were the worse things about my hospital stay.
The wound is gonna heal open. They have to pack it with gauze every day so it heals right. That's the only really painful part and I have had it done twice so far. They pull the past day's gauze out and that stings pretty bad, then they pack in some more with hands or q tips. That feels like you have a bad bruise and someone keeps pressing it. They tell me I can scream if I want, but I don't have to so I guess my painkillers are working good.
